Taliban members create DIY drone using a bird and some explosives

Authorities in Afghanistan have discovered what they called a “do-it-yourself drone” that was supposedly made by the Taliban, according to Gizmodo.  What they mean by this is that somebody equipped a bird, no bigger than an eagle, with a surveillance camera, a GPS tracker, and an explosive vest.

The bird was spotted on a highway in the northern Afghani province of Frayab on Saturday. The police in the area spotted the bird and grew suspicious after noticing that it had an antenna on its body. Not wanting to take a risk, the police shot the bird, at which point it exploded and “suspicious metal stuff” was sent flying in every direction, according to The Independent.

The authorities in the area now believe that the aerial assassin was most likely “deployed” on a suicide/surveillance mission by members of the Taliban. One of the biggest giveaways is the fact that the bird isn’t native to the area, according to The New York Post.

“We are gathering all the stuff, but found parts of what looks to be GPS and a small camera,” provincial police chief Major General Abdul Nabi Ilham told NBC News on Saturday, adding that this was the first time that the police had encountered such a situation. While using animals for suicide missions isn’t unheard of, it’s certainly unusual.
